The Paul and May Chu Sportsman / Sportswoman of the Year Award was established in 2010/11 with a fund of over HK$500,000 raised during the Fun Run in honor of the departing President Prof Paul Chu in May 2009. The fund is dedicated to the development of sports in the University.
Application/nomination deadline: 3 August 2026
- Two students and two staff members will be selected for the Award. The Selection Panel, consisting of staff and student representatives, will assess nominations, and select the awardees based on their achievements in the following:
- Sports performance in international, local/open, intervarsity competition and others ("Sports" are defined as those affiliated with a National Sports Association, which is under the auspices of any National Olympic Committee recognized by the International Olympic Committee.)
- Contribution/services to team
- Contribution to the development of sports in the university community
- Achievement without documentary proof will not be accepted and considered by the Panel.
- The award can only be given to the same winner at a maximum of three consecutive years. The same winner can be nominated and granted the award again after a break of one year.
- The Panel can recommend no award be granted in the absence of suitable nomination.

- Cash awards of HK$5,000 will be offered to each student awardee, and HK$2,000 to each staff awardee. Additionally, all awardees will be presented with a personal trophy, and their names will be engraved on a communal trophy for campus display.
Nomination forms, together with supporting documents (e.g., copies of certificates where applicable), must be submitted via e-mail to the Secretary of the Sports Awards Committee (pmchusports@ust.hk) by 3 August 2026. Nominations will only be processed upon receipt of all supporting documents. Late nominations will not be considered.
Eligibility:
- All full-time HKUST students including undergraduate, postgraduate, and exchange-in students
- All full-time HKUST staff members
Nomination:
- All members of the University are welcome to nominate candidates for the Award.
