SOAR Guide

1. Can I join both the Guide and Explorer programs if I am available?
Of course, you can! As a member of the SOAR community, you are encouraged to join various programs to enrich your journey of outdoor adventure! Each program offers unique insights and opportunities for growth, so feel free to explore as many options as your schedule allows.
2. I already have a Level One Mountain Craft Training Certificate from another provider. Can I be exempted from the training sessions?
No, you cannot be exempted. Our training approach includes additional resources that enhance your outdoor safety skills and offer more practical sessions for you to navigate in a new environment. This ensures you gain valuable experience tailored to our program.
3. What will the Final Grand Challenge look like?
The Final Grand Challenge is a unique outdoor experience where you and your fellow guides will take ownership of the challenge. You’ll plan the challenge, navigate together and share memorable moments as you apply everything you’ve learned. We will provide more information during the training sessions.
4. Do I need to pay any fees to participate in this program?
The training program and the related expenses for outdoor adventure cost over $3,200 and are fully subsidized by the Dean of Students’ Office (DSTO). However, if a participant cannot complete the program in full due to legitimate reasons supported by proof (illness or an exam conflict), DSTO reserves the right to charge you HK$1,200.
5. If I’m sick or my exam schedule prevents me from joining a training session, what should I do?
If you can’t attend a session due to illness or an exam conflict, please inform us as soon as possible and provide a medical certificate or email proof.

SOAR Explorer Trail Running Community

1. I’m not used to running. Can I still join?
Absolutely! Our program is designed for all fitness levels, including beginners. The tailored training helps you gradually build your stamina and confidence.
2. I’m afraid the training is too intensive for me.
Join our Experience Trail Running @HKUST on 17 Sep (Wed), 6:30-8:30 pm by applying here. This session will give you a taste of our weekday training to help you determine if the community is right for you.
3. What gear do I need to prepare by myself?
You’ll need comfortable running shoes suitable for hiking or trail running and a light backpack for your personal belongings. We also recommend bringing sunscreen and a hat for outdoor sessions. To support your journey of adventure, a set of essential gear (including a quick-dry tee, a lightweight running jacket and a reusable water flask) will be provided to participants who successfully enroll in the program.
